Devastation, then resilience

On September 27, 2024, Tropical Storm Helene brought flash floods, landslides, downed electricity lines, and damaged cell towers, leaving many residents to fight for their survival. Areas were without water, power, or communications for weeks. Latest estimates account for 104 lives lost, and many more injured or still missing.

We’re building a resilient network of partners and cooperatives across the Blue Ridge, putting disaster relief funding to work in ways that will impact the lives of Appalachian children for generations to come.

How we'll do it

When natural disasters occur in a region, there’s a flurry of activity and aid. But often, the last people consulted are those who actually live there. Our resident-centric approach to technology, communications, and logistics, meets people where they are.

Guided by our faith, we’re working every day to strengthen our communities through deep listening, sharing of stories, and making connections for mutual aid.

  • We supercharge government and non-profit efforts.
As a local program executor or advisor, we use communication, administrative support, and our deep network to make things happen.

  • We help donors make the right impact.
We  direct donor-advised funding to the right programs and provide reports and follow-ups to explain how and where those resources made impact.

  • We ensure communication goes both ways.
We're born and bread locals. We live and work here, and we’re keeping dialogue going between organizations and the individuals we call neighbors.

$59 billion in damages and needs

But that's only part of the story. Helene will affect lives and livelihoods for years, even when attention and resources move on. AID WNC was formed as a way to continue the work of community support, even after the first waves of disaster recovery passed.

Stick with us

Our region has all the toughness, compassion, wisdom, and skill we need to get through this. It’s time to put our shared values to work and move forward together. Take a look at our new website, or contact us with questions or comments.
